What has been your favorite or most impactful function or event of WLA?
The WAAL conferences are my go to professional development activity. Getting to connect/reconnect with librarians from different kinds of academic libraries from across the state really helps keep me moving forward as a librarian.
How has being a member of WLA impacted you or your career?
Professionally, I've always worked in really small libraries. WLA has allowed me chances to grow as leader through stints on Conference Planning and WAAL Chair. It's also allowed me to learn and adapt from other libraries outside of the type I currently work in. Wisconsin librarians are always willing to share knowledge and help each other and that's been essential for me to grow programs and services at the libraries I've worked in.
Do you have a library role model (in Wisconsin or elsewhere) that has provided you with inspiration or guidance? Please share a little bit about it.
Jeff Ellair and Pete Gilbert. Both are absolutely brilliant, kind leaders. I love to pick Jeff's mind because he uses a lot of data driven decision making and that speaks to me. And Pete really gave me a great example of the kinds of ways I want to serve the library community. I'm very fortunate to have gotten to work closely with them both over the years.
Do you have any advice for new WLA members?
Get involved in WLA as early as you can. Build connections. Reach out to that person that presented a conference program you really enjoyed and want to learn more about. Don't be intimidated by the folks at the "big" libraries. We all have something amazing to offer the Wisconsin Library Community.
