What has been your favorite or most impactful function or event of WLA?
My very first WAAL conference in 2018.
How has being a member of WLA impacted you or your career?
WLA has been such an important part of my career in that it has connected me to libraries and librarians across the state. I truly value these connections and look forward to making more! WLA has also given me a wonderful venue to explore and collaborate on ideas with colleagues through conferences, presentations, meetings, etc.
Do you have a library role model (in Wisconsin or elsewhere) that has provided you with inspiration or guidance? Please share a little bit about it.
I have been so lucky to have a variety of folks take me under their wings when it comes to librarianship. I can't possibly mention everyone (this would be a very long paragraph!) but one of the most influential people for me regarding librarianship was my previous supervisor Giulia Caspari. Her patron-centered approach and belief in the value of everyone's work (from student workers to library directors) has stayed with me and guides what I do as a librarian to this day. It would also be remiss for me to not mention Susan Foran and Catherine Loomis who taught me everything I know about cataloging and technical services. Their continual patience, support, and encouragement allowed my love for library work grow and flourish.
Do you have any advice for new WLA members?
Everyone always says this but get involved wherever you can! If you're looking for a short(er) term commitment, conference committees are a good place to start. There are also a variety of groups that you can get involved in, even if it just means sitting in on their meetings. If something interests you, try it out! You don't have to have a lot of experience in the subject to be involved. You'll learn as you go. Also, all the WLA members I've met have been extremely invested in helping newer members find their footing, so reach out if you need help or have questions.
