Breakout 1: Critical Librarianship in Practice
Milwaukee 1
Presenters: Claire Dinkelman, Marquette University; Emylie Fossell, Marquette University; and Maxwell Gray; Marquette University.
More than just an area of research–learn how three academic librarians incorporate critical librarianship in their regular practice. Presenters will discuss specific projects in their areas, including collection development, technical services, and instruction services. We will explore how we are approaching: hate speech in print collections, marginalization and stigma in cataloging and classification, and one-shot library instruction for STEM students. We will discuss how our projects developed over time, challenges we encountered, solutions we found, and directions for future work in our areas. We also recognize we are not the only people doing this work. We will reserve the second half of the session for participants to share and discuss their own projects to grow a local community of practice.
Breakout 2: Curating Diverse Instructional Media Collections to Empower Pre-Service Educators
Milwaukee 2
Presenters: Jackie Sernau, UW-Stevens Point; Stacy Gray, UW-Stevens Point; and Amber Garbe, UW-Stevens Point
The Instructional Media Center is a tremendous resource for pre-service educators as they develop their knowledge of diverse texts that can be used to advance the learning of their future students. This fingertip access allows pre-service educators to experience the process of analyzing text for instructional purposes. In this session, we will review the wealth of resources available to support educators in identifying and using diverse texts. Join the conversation as we share the voices and experiences of pre-service teachers and collaborate on how we can empower them in their resource selection.

Membership in Wisconsin Library Association (WLA) can be made all the more valuable through involvement in the divisions, sections, special interest groups and committees of WLA. In this panel presentation, active members of WAAL and WLA will share their experiences and provide guidance for emerging leaders who are interested in being more involved with the association. Panelists will discuss their professional development through WLA volunteer work. Information on available volunteer opportunities will be provided. Audience members will be invited to engage with the panelists throughout the presentation and during a question-and-answer session.
This session will be followed by a discussion about the WAAL unit and our 2022 activities.

Breakout 4: Comedy of Errors: Stage Directions for a Library's Shift to Online Learning
Milwaukee 1
Presenters: Haley Lott, Beloit College; Kelly Leahy, Beloit College
Join our cast of characters as we break the fourth wall to analyze the three acts of pandemic learning, sharing the strategies we used to facilitate partnerships between faculty, staff, and students during the pandemic and the resources that helped us become a leader for change on our campus.
Breakout 5: Cultural Competence in Libraries: Encouraging Reflective Practice via the Critical Incident Technique
Milwaukee 2
Presenter: Eric Ely, University of Wisconsin - Madison
The United States population is increasingly diverse. More specifically, institutions of higher education are also rapidly diversifying. As such, effectively serving diverse patrons is as relevant as ever, especially when employing a broad conception of diversity. Race, ethnicity, religion, ability, veteran status, sexual identity, gender identity, socioeconomic status, and educational attainment comprise a selection of various forms of patron diversity that librarians and library staff may encounter in their daily work. Given this broad conceptualization of diversity, how can one possibly understand every cultural or social group? Is doing so even possible? If not, what can be done to mitigate potentially inappropriate or harmful actions? This presentation will discuss the use of the critical incident technique, common among service-based professions (e.g., nursing, social work, education), as a tool to promote reflective practice among library and information science professionals and staff.
2:45 PM - 3:15 PM
Sweet & Salty Snack Break!

Breakout 6: OER 101 & Beyond
Milwaukee 1
Presenter: Nicole Breed, Library & Information Services Instructor and Liaison Librarian, Chippewa Valley Technical College
Open and Affordable Educational Resources (O/AER) are a hot topic in academic libraries as we seek to make higher education more attainable as well as sustainable. This session will begin with the basics of O/AER followed by a walkthrough of one institution's consultation process between faculty members and the library.
Breakout 7: Transform Your Library Space on a Dime
Milwaukee 2
Presenters: Mary Lopez, Milwaukee Public Library; Jennifer Webb, Milwaukee Public Library; Elizabeth Humphrey, Milwaukee Public Library
Learn how two very different libraries transformed their library space with nearly no budget. Milwaukee Public Library’s Atkinson Branch Library was built in 1961 and their Washington Park Branch Library was built in 2003. How we got the idea, how we figured out what to do, how we got support from administration and have library space that works better for staff and patrons.
